OURS IS A STRANGE SOCIETY...

Have you ever noticed that, whenever pause allows
you time to focus briefly on the whens and whys and hows,

you notice that minor changes in your program or grand plan
are all it takes to screw things up and turn intention to sand?

What is the bigger problem, often it is pondered:
Ignorance, Apathy, or just opportunity squandered?

‘I don’t know and I don’t care’ – the typical response.
We may not know the answers but we know our needs and wants.

Ours is a strange society where conflicts much abound
between all types of people fighting for their ground –

whether religion, age or race, politics or sport,
environment, animal rights, beliefs of every sort,

irrespective of positions or arguments that matter,
our species’ selfish nature is a constant equalizer.

As are ticket lines, security checks, bathrooms at events,
traffic lights, parking lots – usually, it makes no sense:

government office or food counter with only one line open,
while people spend their lives in lines, with barely a word spoken.

All waiting, watching, irritated – most staring into space –
as time, energy and focus all dissipate to waste.

Ours is a strange society: plodding forward as we’re allowed,
while selfishly and fanatically just trying to hold our ground.
